“Now in its 12th year, the IP Service Industry Awards is an annual event hosted by the Korea Intellectual Property Service Association to recognize individuals who have significantly contributed to the advancement of the IP service industry. The awards aim to boost morale and promote role models in the field of intellectual property services.
Patent attorney Soon woong Kim was recognized for his 24 years of dedicated service to the intellectual property field and his outstanding contributions to the development of Korea’s IP industry.”
Driving Innovation and Growth in the Domestic IP Service Industry
From 2003 to 2006, Mr. Kim served as Director of Technology Transfer at the Seoul National University R&DB Foundation,
where he led the adoption and implementation of various technology transfer and commercialization models for universities, helping to establish systematic IP management practices.
In 2006, he founded Jungjin IP Law Firm (formerly Jungjin International Patent & Law Office) and has since demonstrated exceptional leadership in fostering corporate growth and advancing the Korean IP service industry. The firm has handled over 12,000 patent and trademark filings, and as of the end of last year, had grown to a team of over 40 professionals.
Jungjin provides comprehensive IP services—including patent trend analysis, filing, and commercialization consulting—to leading domestic clients such as EuBiologics, CJ, Fabtron, SCD Pharmaceutical, as well as major institutions such as Asan Medical Center, Samsung Medical Center, and the National Marine Biodiversity Institute of Korea.
Since 2010, Mr. Kim has also been continuously involved in IP-R&D projects with the Korea Institute of Patent Information (KIPI), supporting universities, research institutes, and companies with patent research, creation, and strategic IP management.
Expanding the Scope of IP Services
Beyond securing IP rights for research results, Mr. Kim has actively supported the transfer of university and research-based technologies to industry,
achieving over KRW 1 billion in technology transfer revenue annually since 2016.
In 2008, he conducted research for KIPO on “Disclosure of Origin of Traditional Knowledge and Genetic Resources,”
contributing to Korea’s response to the Nagoya Protocol. Following the enactment of Korea’s Genetic Resources Act in 2018, he pioneered new IP services in compliance with the protocol.
In 2020, he established the Jungjin IP Strategy Institute, a global consulting firm specializing in advanced IP strategies and systems,
which operates alongside Jungjin IP Law Firm to deliver strategic, full-cycle IP solutions from technology discovery to commercialization for universities, companies, and research institutions.
Promoting International IP Service Exports
Since 2018, Mr. Kim has actively participated in international IP events and exchange forums in countries such as Japan, China, and the United States,
helping drive global expansion of Korea’s IP services.
As Vice Chair of the IP Overseas Cooperation Committee of the Korea Intellectual Property Service Association since 2022,
he led the Korean delegation at the 2023 China–Korea IP Service Industry Conference in Beijing, promoting bilateral cooperation.
Fostering the Next Generation of IP Professionals
Mr. Kim is also deeply committed to nurturing IP professionals. He participates in IP Service Academy programs and specialized training organized by the Korea Intellectual Property Service Association, and has served as an IP instructor at national universities such as Gyeongsang National University and Inha University since 2007.
The commendation from the Presidential Council on Intellectual Property recognizes Mr. Kim’s tireless efforts and contributions to the field. We look forward to his continued leadership in advancing Korea’s IP service ecosystem.
